Talis Aspire List of the Week: Researching the social world (Liverpool Hope University)

December 2nd, 2011 - No comments - Posted by in List of the Week.

Our list this week, “Researching the Social World”, comes from Liverpool Hope University.

You can view it here.

What we like about this list

Firstly, picking up on previous discussions around how resource lists can contribute to developing information literacy skills, it’s great to see the sections on both ‘Journals’ and ‘Websites’ guiding students to broader reading rather than just specific texts.

However, the main reason this list stands out from the crowd is the frequent use of annotation on a significant proportion of the resources. If we exclude the journal section, 4 in every 5 resources have a comment from the tutor explaining why it has been selected, or the expectation on the student when using it.

It is also relevant that many of these comments are only 1-2 sentences long – showing how it takes only a small effort to greatly enrich the list and the learning experience of the student.

Closing Thoughts

Imagine this list without these short annotations on all the resources – the impact would be certainly be both significant and detrimental! Have you seen a list which has as many resources having annotations? Tell us about it below!
